The town of Bardejov, remarkable for its rich and colourful history, is situated in north-eastern Slovakia, at the western slopes of the Nízke Beskydy range. Its medieval old town was built with outstanding simplicity and regularity.

The square that makes the very centre of Bardejov used to serve as a marketplace. Bulding on this tradition, a popular market is held there annualy, as well as the cultural event known as Roland's Summer. The medieval Church of St Egidius, built at the fortification walls, neighbours the town hall, a distinctive piece of medieval architecture. One will certainly notice a weird figure placed on its entrance oriel representing a boy with his head between his legs, showing his bottom towards the square. Legend has it the sculpture was created under the cloak of night when the town council had not paid the agreed amount for the requested construction work. The town hall currently houses exhibitions of the Šariš Museum (Šarišské múzeum), including a superb work of art, A Small Calvary by Master Pavol of Levoča.

Burgher houses erected along the streets running from the square had their facades shaped in various artistic styles. The town itself was protected from enemies by a thorough fortification. As one of the most complete, this fortification system was included in the European Cultural Heritage Fund. A heart-shaped stone memorial with a cross rising from it was erected at the Western Gate of the town ramparts. The wife of one of the mayors had it built in 1680 on the spot where her husband had allegedly died defending the town.

A unique urban formation – Jewish suburbium – developed to the north-west of the town centre, consisting of a synagogue, gathering place, ritual bath, and a business space. Both the suburbium and the historical square are listed in the UNESCO world heritage list.

The picture of Bardejov is enhanced by the lovely spa of Bardejovské kúpele, renowned not only for its healing springs but also for the marvellous spa architecture that makes it a place attractive for relaxation and recreation. Many will be enchanted by a sculpture of a sitting woman representing Elizabeth, Empress of Austria (the popular Sisi). It was made to commemorate the visit of the Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary in Bardejovské Kúpele. Worth visiting is also the open air museum where folklore events and folk crafts presentations take place in summer.
