Torrevieja is a seaside city and municipality located on the Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante, in south-eastern Spain. Torrevieja lies about 30 miles south of the city of Alicante and was originally a salt-mining and fishing village as it is located between the sea and two large salt lakes (Las Salinas), which give Torrevieja a healthy micro climate.
In recent years the local economy has hugely expanded due to the tourist industry. This includes both a strong contingent of British, Germans and Scandinavians, many of whom live there all the year round, and Spanish tourists who have a holiday home in the city. The high number of British ex-patriots has led Torrevieja being nicknamed as 'the costa del Yorkshire' by some holidaymakers, often surprised that many British residents import cheap mass produced bread from England such as Warburtons and Hovis.
The entire area around Torrevieja and Orihuela is famous for their salt production. Huge salt lakes surround the road down from Alicante.
Apart from traditional holiday tourism during summer, Torrevieja has huge British and Irish communities similar to Benidorm. The city is full of pubs and restaurants of both Spanish and European style. Around the beaches of the city where huge apartment building have been built the Torreviejas real estate market is as vibrant as the fish market along the harbor.
The beaches at Torrevieja include Playa los Locos, Playa del Cura, Playa Naufragos and Playa del Acequion, all situated along the coast.
The weather in Torrevieja is very stable, with relatively mild temperatures in winter. The coldest months are January and February, with temperatures ranging from 8 to 16 degrees and the hottest months are July and August with temperatures ranging from 28 to 35 degrees.
